The Monty Roberts International Learning Center (MRILC) is dedicated to promoting gentle, more effective alternatives to violence and force through educational courses ranging from beginner to advanced levels of horsemanship. Monty Roberts, Dean of Students, leads a team of exceptional Certified Instructors who have dedicated themselves to sharing Monty’s training philosophies by completing an extensive certification process. The MRILC is unique from other training facilities because the primary focus of our curriculum is on equine psychology and behavior rather than riding skills. Students develop a solid understanding of what motivates and influences equine behavior in order to increase their effectiveness in the application of their choice: virtually any discipline of riding, veterinary assisting, shoeing, racehorse training and so forth.
The Monty Roberts International Learning Center is located at Flag Is Up Farms in the Santa Ynez Valley, California at the heart of the Central Coast’s wine country just 40 miles north of Santa Barbara.
DENISE HEINLEIN | CALIFORNIA
Denise discovered her passion for horses at a very early age and started to ride when she was 5 years old. She got her own horse when she was 13 and still owns him now. After completing a school for foreign languages and interpretation, she went traveling and spent time learning from different western trainers in Canada, Austria and Germany. Since 2006 Denise has followed Monty’s methods and been working and learning from Monty himself and different Certified Instructors at the MRILC and in Germany, Portugal, Netherlands and England. From 2008 to 2009 Denise worked with Annemarie van der Toorn in the Netherlands riding starters and remedial horses. Denise has been a member of Monty’s German Tour team since 2008 where she is involved in the horse selection and Join-Up® presentations. In November of 2009 Denise realized her goal of becoming an Instructor of Monty’s methods and is now spreading the concepts of Monty’s non-violent approach. After teaching classes and courses in Germany and getting a lot of experience in the Thoroughbred Industry she is now working and teaching at the Monty Roberts International Learning Center in California. She is also a member of Monty Roberts Instructors Committee.
CERTIFICATION COURSES MRILC
The Monty Roberts International Learning Center offers the certification courses below.
The Introductory and Advanced courses provide a strong foundation in Monty’s methods. They are valuable in their own right, but are also part of the process to become a Monty Roberts Instructor.
The Introductory course can be completed with any of our Certified Instructors worldwide. Some teach it in different formats, but the content and qualification are the same. For some students, the Introductory Course provides all of the skill they need to be successful with their horses. For those who want to further their skills, or become professionals in the industry, the next step is the Advanced course, which can only be completed at Flag Is Up Farms in California.
All course offer students effective tools to communicate using the horse’s own natural language, forming a partnership based on trust and communication rather than dominance. Included in your course is a subscription to Monty’s Equus Online University. This online learning tool will give you a great start prior to the course and a greater idea of what you will be learning and doing in the round pen during your course. The ongoing education that you will have with the online lessons will suggest exercises to continue with at home while working toward your exams.
