Pioneer of Gentle Horsemanship Dr. Robert Miller, 92, speaking at The Movement Symposium in Solvang CA

Sunday, March 31st, 2019

March 31, 2019 Solvang, California: Dr. Robert Miller, DVM, Founder of Foal Imprint Training began his practice at the Conejo Valley Veterinary Clinic in Thousand Oaks, California and spent thirty-one years there before retiring as a renowned veterinarian and expert in ethology (the study of animal behavior). Dr. Miller has visited every continent giving lectures to colleges, conventions and every other kind of animal group imaginable. He has received numerous professional awards for his involvement with equine associations, production of videos, and lecturing.

Dr. Miller has authored several books, and his acute sense of humor and love of cartoons have provided seven veterinary cartoon books. Dr. Miller has been on the editorial staff of the finest horse magazines and devotes his full time teaching equine behavior to support the movement in horsemanship that began in the Western United States in the late 20th Century and is now a worldwide phenomenon. He is best known for his scientifically based system of training newborn foals called imprint training. If done correctly, it is the fastest, and most profound method of permanently shaping a horse’s responses and attitude. Imprint training is now in use all over the world.

Monty Roberts invited Dr. Miller to speak at The Movement to lend his lifetime of knowledge to the symposium that explores the how and why of the qualities of horses that teach us to lower stress and build trust in all relationships, to be held at Flag Is Up Farms, in Solvang, California, April 29-30.

The Movement symposium launched in 2018 with the vision to unite outstanding speakers and live demonstrations with horses. Founded on Monty Roberts’ belief that non violent forms of communication are essential to building trust and achieving outstanding results, the mission of The Movement is to help people discover the unique power of horses to teach better ways to interact across all aspects of life.

Participants from around the world will journey to Solvang to attend the life changing symposium. The 2018 presentations were recorded for historical relevance and can be found here.

The journey continues with world renowned experts across psychology, science, social work and horse training exploring breakthrough insights on how mindfulness and horses help us better learn, lead and live better.

2019 PRESENTERS APRIL 29-30

  • Monty Roberts, horse trainer, Join-Up concept founder
  • William Miller Ph.D., Emeritus Distinguished Professor of Psychology and Psychiatry, The University of New Mexico
  • Kris Robins, CSW and Member, Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers, Veterans Program Developer
  • Dr. Veronica Fowler, Senior Post Doctoral Scientist, Equine Behavior
  • Dave Mochel, Mindfulness Coach, TED Talk contributor
  • Christy Counts, President The Right Horse Initiative
  • Dr. Robert Miller, DVM Founder of Foal Imprint Training

The importance of clinical science trials, training methods, non-violent communication and a mindful approach will be represented as essential to build trust and significantly improve all aspects of relationships. The unique power of mindfulness and the unique power of horses will be explored during two days of keynote presentations from a cross section of speakers, live demonstrations with horses and meaningful discussions. Whether a horse expert or horse lover, the goal of the take-home is to affect lives in a positive way through studying the qualities of the horse.

Tickets can be found here.

“We are describing The Movement as an event to Learn, Lead and Live Better,” said Debbie Roberts Loucks who is managing the event. “A movement started in the horse industry when horse owners began to have a clearer vision of how horses affected humans in positive way. Inspired by how interchangeable the lessons from herd behavior were, I’ve watched trainers, teachers, mothers and managers become better communicators, leaders and influencers for good. This year’s presenters are each amazing in their industries and they all have a vision of a better world, inspired by incorporating horses in their own story. They come to share that vision and build on it with participants who will take home a life-changing plan. Leaders may inspire, but only when people choose to act does a vision become a movement.”

This unique event helps you better understand problem solving using violence-free training methods. People will come and spend time with like-minded people absorbing what non-violent communication can be and enjoy discussions with Monty and students from around the world.

At the workshop, Monty and his Certified Instructors will work with a range of young and remedial horses. Participants will gain first-hand knowledge during demonstrations, lectures, and discussions. This event is for the novice rider, the non-rider, as well as the advanced student who wants to observe advanced horsemanship at work. There will be demonstrations on how to communicate with horses in their natural language in various situations.

“The Movement event is approved as continuing education credit hours for our CHA membership as it brings together scientific and practical experts who are helping horses and humans to work better together,” Christy Landwehr, CEO of the Certified Horsemanship Association.

Monty Roberts’ life’s goal is “to leave the world a better place than I found it, for horse and for people too.”

The Movement – Monty Roberts-Produced

“Violence is Not the Answer” Named Triple Finalist

for EQUUS INTERNATIONAL Film Festival® Awards

Solvang, California (January 31, 2019): Monty Roberts is known as a horse whisperer, a New York Times best-selling author, an honorary Member of the Royal Victorian Order and now it might be time to add, “the Tom Hanks of equestrian filmdom.”

The 30 minute film from Monty Roberts Productions, The Movement – Monty Roberts and Diego, the Wild Mustang, Violence is Not the Answer, has been officially selected as a finalist in three Best Of award categories – Best Series, Best Training and Best Film Representing the Horse/Human Bond — during the 2019 EQUUS INTERNATIONAL® Film Festival, March 14-17, at the Roxy Theater in Missoula, MT.

“Violence is never the answer,” says Roberts. “Violence is always for the violator and never for the victim. None of us was born with the right to say you must or I’ll hurt you to any other creature, animal or human. That’s the policy I’ve lived with. Bringing it over to horses, allow a horse to want to do it. Congratulate them. Tell them how good they were.”

In 2017, EIFF presented Roberts with its Equine Icon Award for his work bettering horses’ lives and embodying the horse/human bond. He also accepted four EIFF awards for Monty Roberts Productions, for Best Music Video (Whisper), Best Short Series (Palm Island: Horse Sense for People); Best Series (Backstage Pass); and Best Equine/Human Bond (Shy Boy, The Horse that Came in from the Wild ).

Monty Roberts first gained widespread fame with the release of his New York Times Best Selling book, The Man Who Listens To Horses; a chronicle of his life and development of his non-violent horse training methods called Join-Up®. Monty grew up on a working horse farm as a firsthand witness to traditional, often violent methods of horse training and breaking the spirit with an abusive hand. Rejecting that, he went on to win nine world’s championships in the show ring. Today, Monty’s goal is to share his message that “Violence is never the answer.” He is credited with launching the first of its kind Equus Online University; an interactive online lesson site that is the definitive learning tool for violence-free training. On Saturday evening, March 16, EQUUS INTERNATIONAL Film Festival will recognize some of the world’s best in documentary, independent, music video, and educational film craftsmanship across more than 30 award categories and posthumously recognize Dayton O. Hyde, founder of the Black Hills Wild Horse Sanctuary, with its 2019 Equine Icon Award.

Consider Year-End Support for Horse Sense & Healing

Friday, November 30th, 2018

November 30, 2018, Solvang, California: Join-Up International’s programs are effectively assisting veterans, at-risk youth, animal welfare and education of future trainers of non-violent horse training. Horse Sense & Healing, Lead-Up and a horse gentling program are regularly offered through the Monty Roberts International Learning Center as programs under the non-profit Join-Up International (JUI).

The Learning Center is located in the Santa Ynez valley at Flag Is Up Farms, where amazing successes training dedicated young men and women are achieved to promote Join-Up’s mission. The staff and volunteers are dedicated to promoting and teaching gentle, more effective alternatives to violence, such as trust building communication, through educational courses and clinics, using horses as a vehicle for this process. Violence is never the answer.

JUI has two other important programs, one for veterans, first responders and their families and the other is for at-risk youth. The horses are the barometers of the participants’ emotional control and stress reduction in our Horse Sense & Healing program since 2010. Lead-Up was developed for youth to reduce violence in the community by forming peaceful leaders. Join-Up offers everyone an effective tool to rediscover themselves through the eyes of the horse.

Fulfilling the work of JUI and the Learning Center takes the help of passionate supporters who recognize the importance of education and what it takes to achieve the goals. Join-Up International, Inc. is a 501c3 non-profit organization, tax ID 77-0459889. Gifts are fully tax-deductible as allowed by law.

Here is how to help:

·      Make a donation online at http://www.join-up.org/how-to-help/

1 on 1 Coaching with Monty Roberts

Wednesday, October 31st, 2018

October 31, 2018, Solvang, California: There were lots of ‘firsts’ in 2018 for Monty Roberts! When Monty opened the first segment of The Movement Symposium in May 2018, students were immediately positively affected by the horses.

This transformative two-day journey helped attendees discover the unique power of horses to find mindfulness, to learn and apply non-violent forms of communication and leadership and to help humans and horses live better lives.

In the arena, presenters and trainers shared their perspectives of the flight animal and how their vocations were changed when they were able to use horses as a metaphor for a better understanding of their work and relationships.

Monty Roberts was deeply impressed with this extraordinary group of presenters who will move you with their stories and lessons of horses transforming humans.

People can now request Monty’s help with their horses, for which Monty is happy to oblige, carrying on his life’s goal to create better lives for horses and people too. Debbie Roberts Loucks is again managing the event, “A movement starts with a clear vision of a world different than the one we live in today. The presenters are each amazing in their own industries and they all have a vision of a better world, inspired by incorporating horses in their own story. They come to share that vision and build on it with participants who will take home a plan to change their lives too. Leaders may inspire, but only when people choose to act does a vision become a movement.”

“This two-day event is part symposium and part festival and will be lots of fun for those who appreciate horses. The Movement is the perfect environment for connecting with peers who know that horses have a lot to teach”, commented Pat Roberts, wife of Monty Roberts and co-host of the event. “You will learn how Monty keeps stress out of his life with horses, and how to develop the motivation and resilience to achieve your life’s goals.”

Monty Roberts, the New York Times bestselling author of The Man Who Listens to Horses will share his life story about overcoming barriers, motivating yourself and lowering your stress levels to achieve your goals. Other presenters come from backgrounds such as artists, a variety of horse trainers, authors, professors and more.

At the symposium, Monty and his Certified Instructors will work with a range of young and remedial horses. Participants will gain first-hand knowledge during demonstrations, lectures, and discussions. This event is for the novice rider, the non-rider, as well as the advanced student who wants to observe advanced horsemanship at work. There will be demonstrations on how to communicate with horses in their natural language in various situations.

Attendees shared:

“A big dream of my 14 year old daughter Lilly came true at Flag Is Up Farms and I appreciated it very much to meet William R. Miller who’s books I read 20 years ago studying medicine in The Netherlands at the University of Maastricht! Thank you very much for this special time and experience!”

“Even though I have watched Monty work with many horses on videos, that first Join-Up with Diego brought me to tears. When I was talking to my friends later they said the same was true for them. Of course watching Monty and the girls work with Diego and the wild horses was my favorite but the other presenters were great too. I learned something valuable from each of them.”

“It was worth the trip from Europe to Flag Is Up Farms! The two days were inspiring, packed with valuable insights based on real experiences; open-heartedly shared among likewise thinking people – a real Movement! It was great being part of it! Thank you!”

Monty Roberts’ life’s goal is “to leave the world a better place than I found it, for horse and for people too.”

MONTY ROBERTS AVAILABLE FOR SELECT INTERVIEWS:
The New York Times bestselling author and world-renowned horse trainer Monty Roberts is available for interviews.

Today, Monty’s goal is to share his message that “Violence is never the answer.” Roberts has been encouraged by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II with the award of the Membership in The Royal Victorian Order, as well as becoming Patron of Join-Up International. Other honors received were the ASPCA “Founders” award and the MSPCA George T. Angell Humanitarian Award and FEI’s Man of the Year. Monty was recently included as Horse and Hound Magazine’s Top 50 Horsemen of All Time. Monty is credited with launching the first of its kind Equus Online University; an interactive online lesson site that is the definitive learning tool for violence-free training.

JOIN-UP philosophies can be seen at work with both humans and horses across the world, from farms to major corporations. To learn more about Monty Roberts or the many applications of his Join-Up training methods, visit www.montyroberts.com. Horse Sense and Soldiers aired on Discovery Military highlighting the therapeutic effect that horses and Monty Roberts’ Join-Up® have on PTSD. Roberts has teamed with The Corporate Learning Institute to help transfer the key learning’s from his work to the workplace.
