Join-Up International Adds Angela Tanner to the Board

Monday, December 31st, 2018

December 31, 2018 Solvang, California: Angela Tanner was born and raised in southern California. She attended UCLA, studying Psychology and Business, graduating with College Honors, magna cum laude, and Phi Beta Kappa. Before returning to graduate school, she interned at the Kewalo Basin Marine Mammal Laboratory in Honolulu, Hawai’i, conducting behavioral research studying cognition and communication in Atlantic bottlenose dolphins. She returned to UCLA for her doctorate to explore the use of brain mapping techniques (specifically functional MRI) to examine the functional and structural topography of the cognitive processes of learning & memory. Her research focused on using fMRI to study the processes and brain areas involved in forgetting.

After earning her doctorate, Angela spent time volunteering and working at Flag Is Up Farms in Solvang, California, taking courses in Join-Up and living on the farm in order to volunteer.  Her love of horses and her dedication in supporting nonviolence with animals drew her to a greater involvement by assisting Monty Roberts on a US tour, Equitana in Germany, and a European tour as merchandise manager.

Angela’s work and experiences in the field of neuroscience and across the species she has studied have fueled in her an enduring passion for creating educational experiences that prioritize respect for the individual to optimize learning.  In 2013, she opened The Knox School of Santa Barbara, a school dedicated to gifted and talented children, grades K-8.  The Knox School’s guiding philosophy comes from the idea that learning is optimized when (1) the individual feels safe, appreciated, and supported, (2) when the environment recognizes and respects both gifts and differences, and (3) when the curriculum is relevant and meaningful.

She continues as Executive Director of the School, working both to ensure adherence to the mission of The Knox School, as well as communicating approaches and strategies nationally at conferences.  In 2018, she co-authored a chapter in “Specialized Schools for High-Ability Learners”.

She joins the Join-Up International Board of Directors after attending a program to benefit the non-profit Join-Up International. The Monty Roberts’ Horse Sense & Healing program is a resilience-building workshop for veterans, police, fire, first responders and their families. The three-day program involves working closely with horses. The individuals and horses develop a special bond built upon mutual trust and respect. Join-Up offers everyone an effective tool to rediscover themselves through the eyes of the horse. This self-awareness exercise deals effectively with emotional trauma, anti-social behavior and withdrawal, anger, stress, combat stress and even Post Traumatic Stress Injury (PTSI).

Join-Up International, Inc is dedicated to promoting gentle, more effective alternatives to violence and force through educational courses and programs that impart Monty Roberts’ concepts of non-violent, trust-building communication. Horses are used as examples and vehicles for this learning process. It is Join-Up International’s intention to leave this world a better place for both horses and humans.

Join-Up International Adds Adrienne Brandes to the Board

Sunday, September 30th, 2018

September 30, 2018 Solvang, California: In 1983, Adrienne Brandes was instrumental in the launch of D.A.R.E. (for Drug Abuse Resistance Education), the police officer-led series of classroom lessons that teach kids K-12 how to shun peer pressure and blow off drugs and violence. D.A.R.E., the brainchild of the late LAPD Police Chief Daryl Gates that was co-founded by the Los Angeles Unified School District, now is active in 75 percent of the nation’s school districts and in more than 52 countries around the world. Brandes played a critical role in getting it off the ground.

Her mother, a successful real estate agent in Los Angeles after the family immigrated from Dublin when Brandes was 6, urged her to apply for the position for the money so she could further her education. Brandes was halfway through a master’s degree program at Chapman University. She was studying for a master’s degree in counseling psychology at Chapman to become a family therapist, after earning her undergraduate degree in social ecology at UC Irvine.

Adrienne, noted for her philanthropy, amongst other causes, supports HeartFelt which funds research into Sudden Cardiac Death. HeartFelt provides free screening to young athletes in hopes of identifying contributing conditions that might potentially lead to serious health issues, including death, on a playing field.

She joins the Join-Up International Board of Directors after attending two programs to benefit the non-profit Join-Up International. The Monty Roberts’ Horse Sense & Healing program is a resilience-building workshop for veterans, police, fire, first responders and their families.

Brandes first became aware of Monty Roberts at The Movement 2018. This two day Symposium and Awards Dinner in Solvang, California, had presenters and trainers sharing their unique perspectives of the flight animal and how their vocations were changed when they were able to use horses as a metaphor for a better understanding of their work and relationships.

For 25 years, Adrienne Brandes has successfully assisted her clientele in buying and selling luxury properties in the Orange County market, more than $194 million in sales in the last four years. Brandes is incredibly hands-on with each client, providing her undivided attention and personal touch to every encounter with passion from start to finish. Surterre Properties is a residential real estate brokerage.

Monty Roberts is the founder of Join-Up International. From a very early age, Roberts was inspired to make his life’s goal to leave the world a better place than he found it, for horses and humans. Roberts has an extensive career in the equine industry as a horse trainer with eleven world’s championships, movie stuntman, and natural horsemanship trainer. In 1997, he founded the non-profit Join-Up International seeing the need for a school where horse persons could come to learn the concepts and the gestural language of the horse he calls Equus. To assist horse persons to use his discoveries, he created a method called Join-Up® which is based on the way horses communicate in the wild. Moving into the world of helping people was the logical next step in influencing his concepts globally to eliminate violence for both animals and humans.

This effort has expanded to include the Horse Sense and Healing program for military and first responders with their families. He also happens to be the first Global Ambassador for The Brooke Animal Charity and visited India on his mission to assist their work there.

Horse Sense and Healing Receives Grant Award from Disabled Veterans National Foundation

Thursday, June 1st, 2017
Monty Roberts’ Horse Sense and Healing Program is honored to announce it has received a grant from the Disabled Veterans National Foundation (DVNF) that will fund several weekend programs of resilience-building workshops for veterans, police, fire, first responders and their families. The three-day program involves working closely with horses. The individuals and horses develop a special bond built upon mutual trust and respect.

Join-Up® is the method Monty Roberts discovered by observing the gentle nature of horses. Horse Sense and Healing offers effective tools to rediscover attendees through the eyes of the horse. This self-awareness exercise deals effectively with emotional trauma, anti-social behavior and withdrawal, anger, stress, combat stress and even Post Traumatic Stress Injury (PTSI). Roberts and his team have been working with persons suffering from PTSI, over the course of five separate recent clinics each year since 2011. The results are coming in, and the outcome is fantastic and have people laughing and getting back to a normal life who have been afflicted with PTSI for upwards of 35 years.

Roberts holds two Ph.D.s in Behavioral Sciences. In these workshops, he demonstrates the deeply healing power of establishing a trusting relationship with horses without the use of force. With his soft-spoken, nurturing style, Roberts assists veterans as they learn to cause a partnership with the horse. After three transformational days, veterans can better understand how to control their anger, confront painful memories, cope with real-life situations and move on with their lives and relationships.

Pat Roberts, Executive Director of Join-Up International said, “We are very pleased to accept this generous donation from the Disabled Veterans National Foundation. It will be used to build trust back in to our service personnel who have served our country and communities.”

Joseph VanFonda (USMC Sgt. Maj. Ret.), CEO of the Disabled Veterans National Foundation was instrumental in the placement of grants. http://dvnf.org/news/

Disabled Veterans National Foundation exists to provide critical needed support to disabled and at-risk veterans who leave the military wounded – physically to psychologically – after defending our safety and our freedom. DVNF achieves this mission by:
  • Providing an online resource database that allows veterans to navigate the complex process of seeking benefits that they are entitled to as a result of their military service, as well as additional resources they need.
  • Offering direct financial support to veteran organizations that address the unique needs of veterans, and whose missions align with that of DVNF.
  • Providing supplemental assistance to homeless and low-income veterans through the Health & Comfort program and various empowerment resources.
  • Serving as a thought leader on critical policy issues within the veteran community, and educating the public accordingly.
