Welcome to Montys website! Known as, The
Man Who Listens to Horses, Monty gained international
fame by developing a method of communicating with horses
using their natural body language and a technique he calls
Join-Up®. Founded on a consistent
set of principles, communication, and trust, Montys
methods assert that violence is never
the answer.
Our site is designed to help you increase your effectiveness with horses by understanding their language which is the first step to developing trust. We suggest you start with two of the core tools to promote a partnership between you and your horse. Monty shares his 60 + years of experience in his only textbook; From My Hands to Yours (click here). Monty’s insights into training led him to patent the most effective tool ever to allow your horse the choice to learn. The Dually Halter (click here) has been Monty’s key to keeping pain and force out of horse training.
Monty has written six internationally published books to date: The Man Who Listens to Horses (click here), Shy Boy: The Mustang that Came in from the Wild (click here), Horse Sense for People (click here), From My Hands to Yours (click here), The Horses in My Life (click here), and Ask Monty: the 150 Most Common Horse Problems Solved (click here). He is currently working on a story told in Shy Boy's voice.
The Join-Up message has inspired new ways of thinking outside
of horse training as well. Today it is being applied successfully
by corporations, governmental
agencies, school administrators, at-risk-youth, violent offenders
and many others (click here).
Tell us your
Join-Up story and tell
us how little things made big things happen in your life.
Whether you are looking for specific tools to improve communication
with your horse, or just interested in learning more about
the message of Join-Up, we
are certain you will find something inspiring within these
pages. ~Welcome!
From Monty's Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) Series:
What is Join-Up and why do you send the hoses away from you when you begin to work with them?
Monty's Answer: Join-Up is the training of horses using their language to establish trust. As I do Join-Up, I am dealing in the language of equus. I have learned that horses use 'sending away' within the family group. I have concluded that they do not regard this as an act of violence, but a use of temporary isolation as a form of discipline. There is no hitting and there is no force. The horses do not resent me for this, and they soon come to me as a friend. The horseman who does not understand why I send horses away has not yet learned the language of the horse. It is a part of their natural communication process. If I regarded it as violent, I would stop it at once, but it is not.
If I can help remedial horses with this method, as I do for approximately 500 each year, then why would I ever stop doing it? These horses often come to me with the statement that if I can’t fix them, they will go to the slaughterhouse. I am successful with virtually all of them, and if you read the horses, they will tell you that they appreciate the work I do. Remember, Lomitas was banned from racing worldwide, and the best people of Germany tried to overcome his problem for months before they called me. He raced successfully ten days after I met him and has been a friend of humans since that time. Lomitas is one of the most successful Thoroughbred stallions in the world today; ask him if he agrees with my methods? Click here to read more of Monty's Frequently Asked Questions Series.
